The Forest Lodge, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire

Back in June I spent a lovely weekend in the small village of Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire. I stayed at a lovely old coaching inn called The Forest Lodge which is about 5 minutes walking distance from the entrance to the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre.

The owners of The Forest Lodge were very welcoming and the quality of the service and food was exceptional. There is ample parking in the forecourt and the hotel lies almost opposite St. Mary’s Church, where legend states that Robin Hood married Maid Marian. I thoroughly recommend The Forest Lodge and hope to make another visit as soon as I can. Their website is at: http://www.forestlodgehotel.co.uk/main.html

Yes, I know the place well. Good food, good beer and just across from the church as you say. Some years ago it was a venue for our local pub quiz league. They put on a good spread of food for us players. I have never stayed overnight (no need as 20 yards down the road I catch the bus and 10 minutes later it drops me outside the Carpenters Arms) but have had good reports about it.

There are not too many hotels in the area for visitors. They are renovating the Hop Pole in Old Ollerton which is a good 18th century coaching inn on the old Notts to York road. Has a view across the field towards the forest as well. Thoresby Hall is a good place to stay but kids can't stay overnight as its for adults only, shame as the grounds are great for them. Another good one is the Clumber Park hotel on the A614. Has a spa (like Thoresby) but across the road there is a footpath that takes you straight into the park and Sherwood forest.

Hi Albie,

I can't wait to get back to your 'neck of the woods!'

When you are back up here let me know. If i am around we can meet up for a beer or 3 if you'd like.

Not been around much all summer. Will try to get out to get some pictures and video clips of the area in next few weeks. Might even put some commentary on them to explain what the places are if the other Whistling Arrows would like that.

And make that 3 or 4 pints!!!

It was still looking nice this evening as I went by on the Sherwood Arrow bus on my way home from Nottingham.

Of more interest is that the bus stops at the visitors centre 400 yards up the road on its way to Ollerton where I get off. Saw that there is a 'Sherwood through the ages' event 2/3rd October if anyone here is around next weekend. Not sure what it is and I won't be around to have a look and see what is going on. There was also an advert for the 'Robin Hood pageant' when I was in Nottingham. its on 30th/31st October but not sure where this is to be held.
